Course Instructor
Course Instructor positions are highly coveted because you are in-the-field bringing GirlVentures’ mission to life!
Responsibilities Include:
- Planning and implementing overall course content, vision and curriculum for an expedition style/in field/24 hour per day course format.
- Co-facilitation and leadership of a group of 12 girls, ages 11-14.
- Instruction includes topics in backpacking, natural history, arts/creative expressive activities, community building, identity, setting boundaries, conflict resolution, girls issues like cliques and body image, camp craft and Leave-No-Trace, stoves and backpacking cuisine, safety briefings for activities, etc.
- Provide support, supervision and guidance for rock climbing and sea kayaking course elements with the direct support of Course Director and Specialists.
- Managing and supervising all activities according to GirlVentures’ operating policies, protocols and procedures
- Supervising and mentoring Assistant Instructor who is an important member of the Instructor team and involved with GV’s Leadership Development Program.
- Positive, authentic role modeling for girls, Assistant Instructors and co-workers.
- Pre-course planning of details for daily course activities within mission, curriculum guidelines and logistical framework.
- Participate with post-course feedback, course evaluations and student assessments.
- Conduct follow-up post course phone calls to girls in September.
Experience/Requirements:
- Staff training, an expedition style, in-field experience.
- Previous experience as an educator and/or facilitator with racially diverse groups.
- Demonstrated successful experience with girls in middle school years, experience with urban girls preferred.
- Ability to frame experiences, course elements and group dynamics in a positive light and that is age appropriate, educational and transferable.
- Demonstrated successful experience leading groups in the outdoors, preferably adolescents.
- Commitment to safety and high quality program delivery.
- Ability to be present, responsive and focused with girls for 14 consecutive days.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the unique needs of 11-14 year-old girls.
- Current Wilderness First Responder/Class B preferred or Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification.
- California Class B Drivers License preferred (GirlVentures will cover 50% of costs).
