Course Instructor
Course Instructor positions are highly coveted because you are in the field bringing GirlVentures’ mission to life!
Responsibilities Include:
- Facilitation of co-facilitation and leadership of a group of 8-12 youth, ages 10-16 with a focus on the GV mission & values.
- Plan and deliver a meaningful progression on core curriculum areas for a multi-day expedition style** course. Instruction topics include: community building & effective leadership; conflict resolution and alliance building; self-care and self-efficacy; media literacy, identify and positive body image; arts and creative expression; camp craft and backpacking skills; natural history and Leave-No-Trace ethics; stoves and backcountry cuisine.
- Maintain an emotionally and physically safe environment for the entire group at all times throughout the expedition on all course elements (ex: kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, rappelling, canyoneering, etc.) Manage and supervise all activities according to GirlVentures’ operating policies, protocols and procedures.
- Collaborate and support element Specialists (ex: climbing or kayaking specialist) with the direct support of the Course Director.
- Supervise and mentor the Assistant Instructor (an alumnae youth and important member of the Instructor Team).
- Be a positive, authentic role model for girls, Assistant Instructor and co-workers.
- Effectively manage course logistics with the support of your Logistics Team.
- Participate in pre-course Prep (2-3 days) and post-course debrief (1 day).
- Complete student assessments and ensure every student completes their student evaluations.
- Conduct follow-up post course phone calls to the girls – as appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Experience leading groups in the outdoors, preferably adolescents, on overnight trips.
- Previous experience as an educator and/or facilitator with racially diverse groups.
- Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) preferred, Wilderness First Aid (WFA) considered.
- Demonstrated success leading girls in middle school years, experience with urban girls preferred.
- Ability to frame experiences, course elements and group dynamics in a positive light and that is age appropriate, educational and transferable.
- Commitment to safety and high quality program delivery.
- Ability to be present, responsive, and focused with participants for 14 consecutive days.
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the unique needs of 10-16 year-old girls.
- Current CPR certification.
- California Class B Drivers License preferred.
- Ability to attend a multi-day, expedition style Staff Training.
- Commitment to safety and high quality program delivery.
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not meet these criteria please consider our Apprenticeship Instructor position and/or take a Wilderness First Aid/Responder course – it will be worth your time for sure.
