GirlVentures Apprenticeship Position
This position gives women with limited experience and high interest in the field of outdoor education an opportunity to gain leadership skills, risk management awareness, technical knowledge, teaching and facilitation experience all in a supportive and professional environment.
This unique position enables the candidate to apprentice a GirlVentures summer course and gain some experience towards becoming a professional in the field of outdoor education.
Responsibilities Include:
• Co-facilitation and leadership of a group of girls, ages 11-14
• Assist in planning and implementing overall course content, vision and curriculum
• Instruction includes topics such as backpacking, natural history, arts/creative expressive activities, community building, identity, setting boundaries, conflict resolution, girls issues like cliques and body image, camp craft and Leave-No-Trace, stoves and backpacking cuisine, safety briefings for activities, etc.
• Provide support, supervision and guidance for rock climbing and sea kayaking course elements (when applicable) with the direct support of Course Director and Specialists
• Managing and supervising all activities according to GirlVentures’ operating policies, protocols and procedures
• Engage girls in arts/creative expressive activities, community building, identity, setting boundaries, conflict resolution, girls issues like cliques and body image, camp craft and Leave-No-Trace, stoves and backpacking cuisine, safety briefings for activities, etc.
• Managing and supervising all activities according to GirlVentures’ operating policies, protocols and procedures
• Participate with post-course feedback, course evaluations and student assessments
Who Can Apply
We are looking for strong leaders who will be positive role models for adolescent girls.
The ideal applicant:
• Is interested in outdoor adventure activities (camping, sea kayaking, rock climbing, etc.)
• Is a minimum of 18 years old
• Wants to empower adolescent girls and be a role model
• Desires to learn about instructing wilderness trips, wilderness safety, and leadership skills
• Desires to gain valuable team-building skills as well as wilderness safety training while working for a diverse, experiential education nonprofit
• Preference given to GirlVentures alumnae who have completed On The Rise
Experience/Requirements
• Attend GV Summer Staff Training, a car camping experience
• Previous experience as a youth educator/ facilitator/ volunteer. Work with adolescent and/or urban girls is beneficial
• Commitment to safety and high quality program delivery
• Ability to be present, responsive and focused with girls for 2 to 7 consecutive days
• Basic level of comfort camping and sleeping outside
• Current Wilderness First Responded (recommended) OR Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification (required)

Compensation
Small stipends will be provided based on experience and depending on the position you are awarded. As well, all your incidentals will be covered while at staff training and on course; (includes: campground fees, food & snacks, transportation to/from the GirlVentures office, and if needed, borrowed outdoor gear & clothing, to be returned at the end of the program.
